Our Christmas Without a Tree

Our plan last year was to get a live tree this Christmas to help support local, small business owners instead of The Man who imports trees made in China. The Man being nationwide franchises like Walmart, Target, Kmart, etc. You get the picture.

The plan was: Buy tall-ish live tree outside the Walmart on Nolensville, buy lights from inside Walmart, and head home to make an event out of tree decorating. We were even planning on getting more decorations since the ones we had were barely enough to cover our five-foot tall Kmart-bought plastic tree with built-in lights.

That was the plan.

So after Christmas 2010, our faithful little two-year old Chinese tree was returned to its box for good — taped up, and then brought to a drive-thru Goodwill Drop Off.

And then life happened this year. Hospital trips both emergency and elective came along with the loss of my part-time job, and we’ve been pinching pennies and making budget cuts since the end of August.

While I was at our organization’s Winter Conference, Kyera sent me a text message:

“Where’s our tree? I was going to put it up but it’s not in our storage.”
“Are you sure? Did we donate it? I can’t remember.”
“Oh right! LOL. We did!”

Up until yesterday, I kept thinking about getting a tree. Definitely not a live one because they’re expensive, but a Chinese one bought from The Man. A five-foot tall tree is $80 now, fifty percent off, at Target, but I just couldn’t bring myself to spend that much on a tree when that money could and should go to groceries. When your priorities are down to food, clothing, shelter, and medical bills, there’s absolutely no room for “Christmas Tree” in the budget. Or clothing for that matter. Food and shelter is far more important. And paying medical bills.

A Wreath from Christmas Past

Aside

One of the things I cannot do to save my life — decorate a wreath. Thought I’d throw this in as my belated tribute to the coming of the ‘Ber months.

Christmas Day 2009

Christmas Day 2009, originally uploaded by thelmabowlen.

We had no agenda other than to stop by Bethel World Outreach Center to take pictures for Festival of the Nations for their hosting of a Christmas service for the Burmese community of Nashville. Kyera took photos; I took images for Bethel’s social media sites.

Since we had no plans for ourselves for the day other than watching Sherlock Holmes, we settled on a cinema in an area we hardly ever visit, Cool Springs. We didn’t get to Fandango our tickets so when we got there, all screenings until 7PM were sold out.

Happy to leave and drive around, we went on a search for an open Starbucks in nearby Downtown Franklin.

Everything was closed which was a perfect opportunity to take pictures.

The Spirit of Christmas Present

The Filipino penchant for Christmas is assumed to be something collectively shared by all Filipinos. My colleagues caught me listening to Christmas songs last May and naturally thought that I am a huge fan of December 25th. (I happened to chance upon an iTunes radio station that played Christmas songs and found myself listening longer than intended and tweeting about it.)

Am I a fan of Christmas? Yes and no.

Yes, because it’s the traditional date that we celebrate the coming of our Savior. Without which, we would have no hope at all. At. All.

No, because I don’t like the traffic and I wish I were a millionaire so I could pull an Ellen and buy people ah-mah-zing gifts.

My Ghost of Christmas Past

Me at Christmas in 1975

"Santa Claus came! Santa Claus came!"

I think this was 1975. The tricky part about being an orphan is not having a parent around to verify dates and occasions. You never really think about the mundane details of your life until you . . . post a blog and would like to verify said details.

This was either our first or second year in our house in Vancouver, Washington, after moving there from Portland, Oregon.

I was an only child so you can imagine how much stuff I got every year. This picture doesn’t even show the 2-3 stockings Santa would fill with miscellaneous little trinkets!
