My favorite Filipino proclivities

There’s nothin’ like hangin’ out with fellow Filipinos to bring out our real selves.

We were mostly strangers at this birthday party–the celebrator and her roommate being our common denominator–but when you put a group of Filipinos together, we manage to be a cacophony of chatter and laughter, like long lost family or friends, regardless of introductions.

We naturally take off and leave our shoes in the foyer, knowing full well that a fellow Filipino’s carpet is clean. I think this is one of the ways we also show our respect. (And common among Asians, I might add!)

And when there’s no more room at the table? No problem.

It’s impromptu gatherings like these that make me long for the Philippines. And proud of my brown skin. American accent and second generation upbringing in America notwithstanding.
